Ally asked:

Ok, it sucks to say this but…..I way 215 pounds….I’m 15, and I’m 5′8. I know my ideal weight would be 140-150-ish, but I have very wide shoulders and wide hips to a little bigger, eh, I wouldn’t mind. Any, I’m not lazy, I have basketball practice mondays and wednesdays, and games tuesdays and thursdays, and the weekends are normally tournaments of about five to six games. Sundays are my only free days. I also eat normally, not overly.

What I really want to know is:

A) Why am I not losing weight

B) Why am I not gaining muscle

C) What are ways I can help myself lose weight?

I am so serious about losing weight now that it’s top on my priority list. I’d even take an entire day planner at this point in time!

Help me?

It could be what you are eating. The food is very important with losing weight. You have to pay close attention to the foods and the ingredients in the foods.

No more soda pop. No more fruit juices. No more so-called sports drinks. No more fast foods. Once you can do that, you will start losing weight. Eat more vegetables and less processed foods. Look at ingredients. Try and avoid any food that has high fructose corn syrup in them. That is the same as sugar and actually it is worse than sugar. It causes fat. It also causes the body to stay hungry and want to eat more.

Sounds like you are active enough, so unless you have a medical condition than it has to be the food you are eating. SwingTrader

ask a doctor, about your weight loss problem, looks like your pretty active, you might be eaten foods that slow down your metabolism, but i’m no doctor, the best help in your situation is to ask a nutritionists! seesaw38

    A) You are not losing weight because basketball is not that good at making you lose weight.
    B) Same reason.
    C) Make more of your diet fruits and vegetables. Do a lot of sit-ups (not crunches) and run. These are the easiest ways to quickly lose weight and build muscle. It takes little time, too. Weightlifting is another solution, but you need weights. I heard that the cold also mkae you lose weight, but I don’t know how cold.

Professional chess competitions can make participants lose 10 pounds in a day, but most people don’t have access to that, nor the ability. toaster?

Work out like a motherf****r. Lift weights, run, do sit-ups and push-ups, stretch, and other types of cardio and aerobics.

Eat less sodium, sugar and carbs. Take in more protein. Eat fruits, granola, nuts, and white meat (limit the red meat).

Get plenty of sleep to have more energy for maximum performance during workouts and also drink plenty of water (forget energy drinks).

You should work out like 3-5 times a week vigorously and just run/walk 20-30 minutes on your break days.

Make sure not to wear yourself out too much. If your regular activities already exhaust you, lighten up a little bit on the exercise and emphasize diet more. Maybe consider increasing your stamina (run more). Saleh M

    Hey Ally,

I hear ya, I’m trying to lose weight myself! Your story sounds like mine, I’m athletic, don’t eat too too badly, and yet I’ve always found myself struggling with my weight. As I was reading in this Fitness Magazine, they did two stories/experiments. Candidate #1 focused solely on her diet, watching what she ate as opposed to working out, and Candidate #2 worked out with a trainer, with the focus on exercise over calorie-counting. Guess who lost the 10lbs.? CANDIDATE #1 THE ONE WHO DIETED. I was kinda pissed off to be honest. All that hard work at the gym.. for nothing??

Not quite, but I guess I kind of had an empiphany there, which made me realize what was/wasn’t working. Being athletic already, a lot of that heavy weight is in fact muscle, but now you have to focus on the eating part – this is crucial to losing weight.

Do you lift any weights at all, being on the basketball team? Cardio is important, but so is gaining muscle, which will encourage fat-burning. At the beginning, I started to gain weight from working out, which left me devestated. But only a couple of weeks after when I paid attention to my eating, like I mean really pay attention and not just half-ass, I started to see the weight come off. I think the way to go about it is to keep a little day planner like you said, write down everything you eat. You’ll realize where your weaknesses are when you eat, mine are portions and chocolate/bread/cheese, so it really forces you to be a concious eater. This has worked for me in the past. Even though it takes dedication and time, it works.

I watched the Dr. Oz show on Monday, which featured his two week diet plan, which is basically a guideline on how to go about it (http://www.doctoroz.com/blog/mike-roizen-md/unhealthiest-american-week-2). There was also this woman who lost mad-weight and posted some of her recipes, but I’m not sure what “Freekeh” is… (http://www.doctoroz.com/blog/bonnie-matthews/bonnie-s-freekeh-recipes)

Weight Watchers has worked as well, the whole idea is counting the calories and gives you a point-guide to follow. Becomes habit after, just takes time and dedication.

Then I found this website here is actually pretty good. What I found extremely useful is this “Create A Diet” plan (http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/app/menuplanner/), which allows you to customize your meals for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, and even gives you a little shopping list so you know what to buy when you go to the grocery store. Try it out, see how it goes. I’m really interested in this myself, so keep me dated, and best of luck to you! Чўпа
