Elle Z asked:

I own/run my own business and a friend of mine wants to start her own business as well. She wants to start a decorative coordination business.
She would have thousands of assortments of trees, ornaments (all colors and sizes), wreaths easter decorations, garland, thanksgiving/fall, kwanza, 4th of July, New Year’s etc.
She would organize/customize specificly for each client as many or as few decorations, come to your house, business, party location and put up and take down (designated amount of time dictated by client) It could be for the Holiday month or just for the day/evening (New Years, 4th, B-day, BBQ etc).
However between the two of us we couldn’t think of a cost. I know it would depend on how many decorations and for how long they would be used/left up.
She would have a catelog that the client can choose from. She would have a large climate controled storage area to accomidate the decorations.
The client wouldn’t have to be stuck with a specific color theme for their holidays and could have a different look every year. Let alone not have the hastle of puting up and taking down their decorations or storing them.
So I am asking for opinions on how much she should/could charge. Neither of us think it should be “per hour”.
We’re thinking it should be per “page” in the catelog. One page might show a less ornate set of decoratins while another shows the “top of the line” assembly. But what would the price range be???????
We’re thinking page (A) would show decorations for a single day and page (B) would be the same decorations for the holiday month/season.
She is also considering party planning but we can do our homework on that as there are caterors all over the place to shop prices. But there is nothing like a decorative planner for us to do research on.
Thank you so much for your very detailed answer. I think everything you said makes absolutely perfect sense. My friend throws HUGE parties during the holidays and everyone asks her for help or advice on how she does this or where she got that so I think she’d be GREAT at it. I asked her to decorate my house this year with my own decorations and was amazed at what she could do with my old crap :)
Your answer is appreciated more than you know.

I’m not sure that would work, because everyone has such different ideas of what they would like. I think you should have a catalog of the items you have available and have a “brag book” (or website photo gallery) of homes you have custom decorated so you can show people your work.

Think about how a landscaper works. They come out and look at your home, ask you what you like and don’t like, how much you can do yourself and what you really need him to do and finally what your budget is. Then he comes back with a plan of perenials, annuals, trees and shrubs drawn out on a diagram of your house along with a cost estimate. You then have the opportunity as the homeowner to start making adjustments, cutting things out to save money, moving things around to suit your tastes, or even adding in more.

What you charge is up to you. You might want to look through some party rental catalogs and see what they charge to rent some of their things. Then price out what it costs to buy that same item, so you can get an idea of what percentage of the cost of the item they are charging to rent it. Don’t forget to add in your labor, design time and travel time.
