I’m so nervous about college, my major, etc?
Rick asked:
So, I went to the first day of my 2-day orientation today and tomorrow I have to choose my classes. I thought I knew what I wanted my major to be, but then it hit me. This is going to influence my entire life, and if you use a certain amount of credit hours, I have to start paying out of state tuition, and I’m only allowed to drop 6 classes in my entire time at college. I’m so nervous I’m not going to choose the right major, even though I’ve had a narrowed down to a few already, which are: landscape architect, urban planner, graphic designer… I don’t know what I’m going to do? Were you in the same boat when you went off to college? If so how did you handle it?

I am not going to college yet; I have another 2 years [junior and senior HS]. However, I know I’d like to be a doctor. I like science, especially biology, because I’m so good at it and it is integral to medical school and being a doctor. I also like knowing Spanish, because it helps me to express myself in another language, I want to travel, and I’m good at it. I didn’t know which major to pursue, Spanish or biology? I wanted to learn spanish more and also study abroad, but I also wanted to do a biology research project. In the end, i have decided to pursue a major in spanish. This is because I wanted it more, and it has more pros than a biology major. All I need for med school is the premed track anyway.
Pick what you’d like to do more. pick what you are more passionate about. Pick what you want more.
My suggestion so that you won’t waste money or time is to go undecided for now. Take your mandatory liberal studies classes first. You probably won’t be able to take your major courses for another semester or two anyways. Also most colleges don’t require a decision until after a certain amount of credit hours. Try to explore the other options while you can and make a decision. Maybe if you take a class that both majors require it’ll help you decide.
I would say do landscape architecture. I was going to do that at Cal Poly SLO but decided against it because I wanted to do law enforcement instead. But it is a great career and there are lots of employment opportunities. Basically it just comes down to what you love to do the most, you have to enjoy what you do.
I was in the same boat as you, even when I started college. I was so sure that I was going to go into psychology but after taking a few classes and really thinking about it, I had second thoughts.
Just this year I declared myself an English major and I’m happy with that choice. My dad got me to realize my talent in that field.
You don’t have to decide right away what you want to do, as not too many students sick with their proposed major and get a degree in it, like me.
Take classes that apply to all of those majors. There should be some overlap between those career paths. If not, be an undeclared major and take a few general education classes for now.
